Colonel Harland Sanders first served his fried chicken in 1930 in the midst of the Great Depression at a gas station in Kentucky.

By the early 1960s Kentucky Fried Chicken was sold in over 600 franchised outlets in both the United States and Canada. Sanders sold the entire KFC franchising operation in 1964 for $2 million USD.

The original handwritten recipe is kept locked away at the KFC corporate headquarters as a closely-guarded secret Only two members within the Yum! corporation know the recipe.

KFC started a search for "a new iconic face for the brand's Kentucky Grilled Chicken." While the winner of the "Ultimate Kentucky Grilled Chicken Fan" contest will receive Kentucky Grilled Chicken for life and may participate in KGC marketing efforts, the winner will not appear on the brand's world-famous bucket.

One of America’s most guarded trade secrets, Colonel Sanders’ handwritten Original Recipe, made a quiet return to its Louisville home last night. Accompanied by armed guards, KFC brought back the secret blend of 11 herbs and spices to its newly modernized and remodeled home.

The return of the valued secret comes as KFC launches its first ever Value Menu, an assortment of 10 delicious menu items all priced at a value-focused 99 cents, $1.49 or $1.99.

KGCNow that a few weeks have passed since the KFC-Oprah coupon fiasco, KFC  now sees the “promotional roller-coaster as a blessing,” according to the Associated Press.

Overall sales are up since the chain famous for fried chicken rolled out its long-tested grilled version April 19 in hopes of luring health-conscious customers and reviving lackluster U.S. sales.
